Lockerbie is a village with a population of approximately 4,000 people. The Scottish village was the site of a 1988 airplane crash. On December 21, 1988, a New York bound Pan-Am Boeing 747 exploded in flight. It was determined that the explosion was caused by the in-flight detonation of a terrorist bomb. The plane crashed in and around Lockerbie. The crash killed all 259 people aboard and killed 11 villagers on the ground. In November 1991, the U.S. Dept. of Justice indicted two Libyan intelligence agents for the bombing. After the imposition of economic sanctions by the United Nations and following lengthy negotiations, Libya turned over the suspects in April 1999. The terrorists were sent to the Netherlands for trial (under Scottish law).
