The United States has, during the past 100 years, engaged in every form of trade manipulation possible. Our government has imposed import restrictions, tariffs, export taxes, and import taxes. The government has used "trade embargos" to close entire markets to leverage other governments and attempt to control their economies and politics. Our government has entered into "favored nation" treaties to increase imports from certain nations to improve their economic position but ONLY after those nations have made political changes our government demanded. Overall, the imposition of taxes, tariffs, and treaties controlling free trade and open markets has cost Americans jobs, cost the taxpayers billions of dollars, caused economic disasters in other countries, and caused Americans to suffer the ravages of rampant inflation and overinflated product costs.
Free trade and open markets provides endless opportunity for American companies to sell products, purchase materials, hire more workers, and openly compete in the global economy. The taxes on imported steel, for example, make American cars cost more and force Americans to either pay more or purchase lower priced imported cars. Free trade does not, as the government is wont to imply, cost American workers their jobs. In fact, by opening our country to real free trade, American jobs would increase. Statistically, when we import more, unemployment actually goes DOWN. When we close our doors to imported goods, other countries close their doors to our goods. When we can't sell our goods, we lay off workers. Unemployment rises.
Free trade is necessary for an economy to grow, people to prosper, and unemployment to be eradicated. We don't need more "trade agreements", we need to eliminate the barriers to free trade -- taxes, tariffs, restrictions, and treaties. Of course, the restriction on the sale of certain technologies to certain countries continues to be necessary to protect our country, but to prevent the sale of food items, consumer goods, or non-technological products merely limits our American companies from experiencing the growth and prosperity necessary to eliminate unemployment in this country.
